Guide to securing your Wireless account

1. Sign in to your wireless router’s IP address by typing in your router’s IP address in a web browser search bar. If you’re struggling to find your IP address most routers have a default IP address of 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 so try typing these in first. You can find your router’s IP address on the back of your wireless router. Type this into a browser search bar to access the login page.
2. Some routers will have admin and password as the default login credentials, so if you don’t know your login details, try these.
3. After you log in, you’ll need to navigate to the list of connected devices. Depending on your router, this information could be located in different places so look through the various options and settings on the account.
4. Try and remove the device that is not required. So long as “Remove” is in blue and not grey this should work. Note: You may want to take a screenshot for evidence before removing a user.Caution

This information guides you on how to take back control of a device that was set up by the abuser. You can factory reset the device if you suspect your device has been compromised or if you want to make sure your device is secure. When you reset your BT Hub to its factory settings, you will lose all updates, including wireless network name and password updates, these will reset to the default settings which you can find on your router.

1. The factory reset button is on the back of the hub, above the power socket.
2. With the hub switched on, push the reset button for five seconds and then release.
3. The hub will now reset. This can take up to five minutes to complete.
4. When the light on the front of the hub has returned to a stable blue colour, you can continue.
5. To reconnect to the hub you will need to use the default SSID name and password on the back of the hub.
6. The admin password will also have been reset to default.

A guest Wi-Fi network is a separate access point on your router. All of your home devices (IoT) are connected to one point and joined as a network, and the guest network is a different point that provides access to the Internet, but not to your home network. It is much safer for guests in your home to connect to the guest network, as this will safeguard against untrusted users gaining access to the devices connected to your primary network.

1. Enter your router’s IP address into the search bar of any browser.
2. Log into your router as admin.
3. Find the guest network settings.
4. Enable guest Wi-Fi access.Depending on your router, this could be a switch that you turn on or a box that you check.
5. Set the guest Wi-Fi network name.
6. Set the guest Wi-Fi password. Depending on your router, you might have to go to security settings to do this. It’s advisable to create a password that is strong and unique. This means it should not include any personal information that someone could guess and should have a variety of letters, numbers and special characters. Note: Be sure not to use the same password for your guest network and your main network.
7. Save your new settings.
8. Some routers will give you an option to set how many guests can access your network. Other models also let you set the time that guests can connect to your Wi-Fi, meaning they will be signed out after a certain period. This safeguards against untrusted users gaining access to the devices connected to Wi-Fi.

1. Log in to your My BT account.
2. Click Your security on the top menu.
3. Scroll to the BT Parental Controls section and click the Manage
4. The next screen will inform you if parental controls are active.
5. Just click on the slider to quickly switch BT Parental Controls on or off.
6. Any changes you make can take up to two hours to take effect. If two hours have passed and BT Parental Controls are still not active, try rebooting your Hub.

You can install antivirus software on computers that access your security system. Firewalls and antivirus programs can help detect any threat of viruses and malicious software. It’s advisable to use a reputable and trusted antivirus software.

You can limit the number of devices that can be used to access your home security system. Your laptops, smartphones and desktop computers should be the only devices that can log into the security system.

To maximise safety and security, it is important to update your home automation software regularly. Most home security companies update their programs to enhance performance, add new features, and counter new threats to security systems. If you do not update regularly, your system may become more prone to hacking so it’s advisable to run updates when prompted.
