Guide to securing your Ring doorbell

If you know the log in details for your account, log in now. Then head to step 4.

If you do not know the log in details, or these have been kept from you, you will need to reset the device by following step 2.

1. Remove the device from its installation plate. To do this remove the safety screws from the bottom of the device, as shown below. This should be done with the tool provided, or a replacement should you not have the original screwdriver.
2. Press and hold the orange button on the back on the device for 15 seconds. The ring on the front of the device should start flashing.
3. You can now set up the ring doorbell as a new device. Anyone who has previously had this device paired with their own Ring app will still see the device listed but will no longer be alerted to motion, rings, or be able to view the live feed.

1. Once the Ring app is open and you have signed in or set up an account, tap Set up a Device, and then select Doorbell.
2. You will be prompted to scan the QR code for your device. The QR code is found on the back of the Ring doorbell. Scan this when prompted in the app and follow the steps, customising the settings to your needs.
3. During set-up you will be prompted to connect your Ring doorbell to your home Wi-Fi. Before connecting to your Wi-Fi, ensure it is secure. You can find out more about securing your Wi-Fi here.

1. On the Ring app home screen, open the menu by selecting the three lines on the top left-hand side of the Ring app home screen then select Account.
2. Look through the details listed to make sure they are correct. If your name, phone number, or email is incorrect, change this by tapping on the relevant information. You will have to confirm your password before you are able to make changes.
3. Check for linked accounts, such as your Amazon account, and ensure these accounts are yours and that they are secure. Your account is secure when it has a strong, unique password that others don’t know and two-step verification is turned on. If you see a linked account you do not recognise, you can unlink it by selecting the account, and then selecting Unlink accounts.
4. If someone else knows your Ring password, or would be able to easily guess it, you should change your password in the Account Settings by selecting Change next to the section Password.
5. Turn on two-step verification for your Ring account by selecting ‘Two-Step verification’.

1. Open the menu by selecting the three lines on the top left-hand side of the Ring app home screen.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Shared Access.
4. From here you can see the other users of the device. If there is someone listed who should not be, you can remove them by selecting their name, and then the bin icon to the right of their name.

1. You can check whether other devices are registered with access to your Ring account. To do this, open the menu by selecting the three lines on the top left-hand side of the Ring app home screen. Select Control centre.
2. Select Authorised Client Devices.
3. To remove a device that you don’t recognise, select the red bin icon next to the device name.
4. To remove all signed in devices, select Remove all devices (the device you are using to access the account will remain signed in).

1. Open the menu by selecting the three lines on the top left-hand side of the Ring app home screen.
2. Select Devices.
3. Select your Ring doorbell (your doorbell may have a customised name set by you or someone in your household).
4. Here you can turn settings on or off as appropriate. These include motion sensing, reviewing events that the doorbell has captured and more. In some cases, you may wish to turn features such as notifications and motion sensing off, if someone with access to the account is using these to monitor you. However, be cautious, as an abuser may notice you have changed these settings and this could cause them to escalate their abuse.

Your Ring doorbell can detect when you are home. The doorbell can be instructed to ‘snooze’ and stop notifying you to motion outside the home if you’re inside. This feature can minimise the number of times the Ring doorbell app notifies you to movement outside once you’re at home. If you do want to be notified of motion outside of the home, you can change this setting. This could be beneficial if someone with access to the account is using this feature to monitor you. However, be cautious, as an abuser may notice you have changed the settings and this could cause them to escalate their abuse.

1. To change the geofence settings open the menu by selecting the three lines on the top left-hand side of the Ring app home screen.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Geofence.
4. You can change the area that is used for the Geofence on the provided map or disable the feature by selecting Disable Geofence.

Encryption is important because it protects your Ring doorbell’s video files. If someone tries to intercept a video as your camera captures and saves it, encryption makes it much harder for them to be able to see and understand your video footage.

1. Open the menu by selecting the three lines on the top left-hand side of the Ring app home screen.
2. Select Control Centre, then scroll down and select Video Encryption.
3. Ensure video encryption for storage and transmission are always on. If they are not, select Storage Encrypted and toggle on. Then select Transmission Encrypted and ensure the toggle is on.

You can also select how long your videos are stored for. You may want to use videos as evidence of someone attending the home when they should not have been. This feature is not free. To save videos taken on your doorbell, you will need to purchase a monthly subscription.

To review this, select the three lines on the top left-hand side of the Ring app home screen. Select Control Centre, then Video Management.
